Confidence

Faith is the confidence that what we hope for will actually happen; it gives us assurance about things we cannot see. Through their faith, the people in days of old earned a good reputation. By faith we understand that the entire universe was formed at God’s command, that what we now see did not come from anything that can be seen.

Hebrews 11:1-3 (NLT)

I am truly confident in very little. I am usually confident that the chair I am about to sit in will hold me. I am confident that the glass I am about to fill will hold water.

God is confident enough to have created the universe from nothing.

My level of confidence is nowhere near where it should be. I know that I don’t have to be confident enough in my own abilities to make something from nothing. I just need to be confident in the one who can. But am I?

In God I have put my trust; I will not be afraid. What can man do to me?

Psalm 56:11 (NKJV)

David seemed to know where to place his confidence. Or did he? The Psalms are filled with David’s cries of trust and commitment. He is referred to the man who chased after God’s heart. I don’t doubt that David’s heart was usually in the right place, but the number of times he felt the need to reiterate is loyalty to and trust in God makes me think that he needed to remind himself a lot of the time.

Perhaps instead of allowing myself to be discouraged in my lack of confidence, I should be using that same energy to tell myself that I am confident in the one who made me. That I trust in His abilities to keep to His promises.

Bless the Lord, O my soul; And all that is within me, bless His holy name!

Psalm 103:1

David even had to give himself a good talking to. He knew that he didn’t have to do it all and he knew who could. David also knew that he needed a continual reminder of who he was and of his relationship with God.

I don’t feel so bad knowing all of this, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t still a lot of work ahead of me.
