And I supposed that if all the other things Jesus did were written down, the whole word could not contain the books.
John 21:25 (NLT)
When I think about Jesus hanging out with the disciples, I always imagine a lot of travel and down time. They walked and talked and laughed and joked around. But here, John ends his account of Jesus’ ministry by telling us that if all the other things Jesus did were written down, the whole word could not contain the books.
So if all the accounts in the Gospels could not even come close to containing all that Jesus did, what else did Jesus do? Oh, what the disciples must have seen and experienced if they only chose to record a minute portion of what they experienced during their time with Jesus. They probably didn’t have the time to write it all!
If we truly follow Jesus example, our ministry as Christians shouldn’t exist only on Sundays or when we’re asked a direction question about our faith or church. Our ministry, like Jesus’, should be an all day, every day kind of thing. Jesus’ ministry wasn’t an endless string of vacations with his buddies, it was day after day speaking his Father’s words, doing his Father’s work. There were no off days—as can be seen by the number of times he ticked off the temple priests by performing miracles on the Sabbath.
So if Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John’s accounts are all just a small portion of what Jesus actually did, what else did he do? If we read of three or four blind people receiving sight, how many more eyes were opened? If there is record of three or four lame men receiving new strength, how may more walked again? If we are told of two or three lives being raised, how many more defeated death?
Yet in all of this, John also recorded Jesus saying:
I tell you the truth, anyone who believes in me will do the same works I have done, and even greater works, because I am going to be with the Father.
John 14:12 (NLT)
When we see a miracle, we should not sit back contented. We should ask, “Okay, God, what else?”
